Freeport School District will soon welcome its next Superintendent. At its regular meeting on June 4, 2019, the district’s Board of Education voted unanimously to appoint Dr. Anna Alvarado as Superintendent.
Dr. Alvarado will begin her new role on July 1, 2019, with a base salary of $180,000 and a three-year contract. She will succeed current Superintendent Dr. Michael Schiffman.
Dr. Alvarado has been in education for 35 years. She currently serves as the Chief Officer for Teaching and Learning at Chicago Public Schools, a role she has been in for one year. Dr. Alvarado previously served as the Deputy Chief of Teaching and Learning at Chicago Public Schools from 2017 to 2018, as Chief of Schools at Chicago Public Schools from 2012 to 2017, and as Deputy Chief of Schools there for half a year in 2012. Since 2016, she has also been an adjunct professor at National Louis University. Dr. Alvarado has gained other experience by serving as an Elementary School Principal in Chicago Public Schools for six years, as an Assistant Principal in the Archdiocese of Chicago for six years, and as a teacher for 17 years.
Dr. Alvarado holds a Doctor of Education degree from National Louis University (2017). She also holds a Master of Arts degree from Northeastern Illinois University (2004) and a Bachelor of Arts degree from College of the Holy Spirit (1982). Dr. Alvarado is a Certified Superintendent in Illinois.
Dr. Alvarado’s appointment follows an in-depth search process completed by the Board of Education that included input from district parents, community, faculty, and staff. Following a stakeholder survey and several community meetings, the Board reviewed applications and conducted extensive interviews, candidate receptions, a site visit, and reference checks. The search firm of Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates assisted the Board in the hiring process.
