Superintendent’s Report

Mental Health Awareness Month
Celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Month
Student Recognition - Rotary $1000 Scholarships Awarded
Applicants were required to write an essay and were also asked to submit 2-3 letters of reference from their teacher, school administrator, employer, and /or pastor. 4 FSD students receiving the scholarship include AJ Evon, Addison Gill, James Giuffre, and Natalie Yeoman. 35 seniors whose current cumulative GPA is a minimum of 3.5 after 2 semesters (30 credit hours), were invited to the Rotary luncheon and received a certificate of recognition.
Teacher/Staff Recognition
IPA (IL Principals Association) Award Recipients: Each year the IPA recognizes exceptional leadership qualities in teachers & support staff. Principals are invited to submit nominations for individuals in their district or building who have exhibited a high level of leadership within their ranks. We are excited to recognize the following staff members:

Attendance
Supt. Alvarado gave an attendance report. For the month of April, attendance district-wide was 90.74%, up .20% from March.
McKinney Vento
The McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Assistance Act ensures the educational rights and protections of homeless children and youth due to the lack of an adequate alternative so that they may enroll in school, attend regularly and be successful.
The main goal of the McKinney -Vento Homeless Assistance Act is to provide homeless students the same educational opportunities as house students by removing as many barriers to learning for homeless students as possible. In 2018-19, FSD had a total of 90 M-V students; in 2022-23 we have 237.
Bullying Policy Update
An update on the Bullying Policy was provided in light of new legislation. A synopsis of the legislation can be found here.

Justin Pasch, Director of Facilities & Grounds provided the board with an annual update on Facilities and Grounds.

Dr. Julia Cloat presented highlights from the Guidebook that will direct Summer Learning / Summer School 2023.

The public is always invited and encouraged to attend Freeport School District Board of Education meetings. The next scheduled regular meeting will be held on May 16, 2023 at 6:00 PM.
